Sunset over the mountains near SamathaStay, Munsiyari

Lucknow to Munsiyari covers around 640 km by road on the standard Haldwani-side route. As with most routes into Munsiyari, the practical approach is usually a mix of train or road to Haldwani/Kathgodam followed by a taxi for the mountain stretch, rather than driving the whole distance in one go.

By train

A few trains connect Lucknow to Kathgodam, the nearest railhead to Munsiyari — options have included the Bagh Express and other Kathgodam-bound services, though timings and train numbers do change, so check current schedules on IRCTC closer to your travel date rather than an old timetable. From Kathgodam, it's the same onward taxi route via Almora and Thal.

By air

Munsiyari has no airport of its own — the nearest is Pantnagar, and flight connections on that route are limited and change over time, so check current schedules before planning around one.

By road: three route options

A direct drive from Lucknow is long, whichever way you go — well over 12 hours in every case — so most travellers either take an overnight train to Kathgodam and drive from there, or split the road journey with a stop partway. Once you're on the Haldwani side, the same fork applies as for every other route into Munsiyari:

There's also a genuinely different eastern option worth knowing about: a route via Sitapur, Khatima, and Pithoragarh that some sources put at only around 565–570 km, roughly 15 hours — shorter than the standard Haldwani-side route, if less commonly used. It's worth comparing both on a map before you commit, since road quality and conditions can matter more than the raw distance.
