Thamri Kund is a small alpine lake tucked into oak and rhododendron forest above Harkot village, a short drive from Munsiyari. It's one of the quieter spots in the area — no entry fee, no built-up facilities, just a forest trail leading to a still pool of water, with the Panchachuli peaks sometimes visible through the trees. For anyone staying a few nights at SamathaStay who wants a change of pace from the bigger-name treks, it makes an easy half-day out.

Getting there

The route runs from Munsiyari town toward Harkot village — roughly 8–12km by road, depending on exactly where you start counting from — followed by a forest trail of about 2–3km. At an easy pace, reckon on somewhere around 45 minutes to an hour each way. The path climbs gently through oak and rhododendron forest rather than anything technical, though a local guide is worth arranging in Munsiyari if you haven't done the walk before, since the trail isn't signposted.

What's at the lake

The lake itself is small and still, ringed by grass and forest rather than open rock — a good spot to sit for a while rather than rush through. On a clear day there are views of the Panchachuli range from parts of the trail and the meadow around the lake. Locally, Thamri Kund is regarded as a sacred site, and it draws far fewer visitors than Munsiyari's better-known stops, so plan on having it largely to yourself outside of peak-season weekends.

Best time to go

May to June and September to October tend to be the most reliable months for this trek, with firmer trails and clearer views. The monsoon months of July and August are best avoided — the forest trail turns muddy and slippery, as it does across much of this part of Uttarakhand — and heavy winter snow can make the route difficult from December through February.
